Leslie Lamata (Costa) (1970)

The Archer family were my neighbors on Pacific Ave. Gail and Gerry. Also, members of the Weldonian Band and Majorette Corp from Oakland and then Hayward area. Gerry opened Down To Earth, the best sandwich shop in San Leandro. Before Subway and all the others. I think he started the fad of sandwich shops. Never knew what happed to him but was told he had moved to the Lake Tahoe area way back when. I believe Gail passed many years ago but not sure on that fact either. Two nice people.

I think Jerry's shop was off of East 14th, in the area of the water fountain. I rember taking my Dad there for lunch and him and Jerry became great friends right away, when I was gone in the service he would stop in there every few weeks or so and when he came in Jerry would shout " Heavy on the Pep's" My dad loved it and also the peppers Jerry would pile on....

Down to Earth was underneath the Masonic Lodge on E. 14th Street.

Last time I was in that area a Mexican restaurant was there now.

It was a great place for a sandwich.

Thank You Patty for the information about Jerry Archer. How sad about his passing. I wanted to get the history of his shop, when it first opened, when he expanded, how he got the name, where he got his ideas from, and why he closed it. I still think it was the best sandwich shop and it was a San Leandro success story. Down To Earth was a part of our teenage life.

Does anyone know whatever happened to David Bunch? He didn't graduate from Pacific but, he would've been in the class of 1970 and any of us that came from Garfield Elementary, or John Muir junior high might know him. he had a marvelous sense of humor, a prolific writer, and was sharp as a tack.

Hello, John. Nice to meet another fan of David Bunch's humor. He hung out with us a lot in the journalism room and was so funny. I have wondered for a long time about what he ended up doing after high school, but didn't realize that his family moved before he could graduate from Pacific. David once said, and with a hint of sadness, that his parents loved their poodles more than they loved him and his brother.

RE: David Bunch. Please go to FACEBOOK group "Pacific High School Class of 1970, San Leandro CA. Our official class 'Keeper of Memories", David Merrick has featured David, with some pictures and stories, that give great depth and appreciation of whom both Davids' were, and who they became, and who they are now. I regret that i did not have the privilege of knowing both of hem over the course of time.

Sue Ferreira (Nunes) (1967)

I received this note from Linda Howard :

Hi Sue,

I am Linda Howard, Ron's fiancé. Hope you are doing well.

I understand that you are the administrator for the "Pacific High Vikings" website. I'm writing, because, although it's been almost three years since his passing, his family and I are planning a celebration to honor him. As you know, we lost Ron during the COVID lockdown, so were unable to do anything but a small graveside service. Now we can do what we had intended all along. I know he would want his friends from Pacific High School, both from his days as a student and as an employee, to be informed.

I have his ID and password to get onto Ron's account but am not sure of how appropriate that is. Is there another way we can post an announcement on the site?

Here are the specifics:

Celebration of Life for Ron Caballero

Friday, May 19, 2023

10:30 AM - 11:30 AM: Mass at the Downtown Saint Stanislaus Church, 709 J St. Modesto, CA 95354

12 Noon (approx.): Honor Guard Ceremony at Lakewood Memorial Cemetery, 900 Santa Fe Ave.,                                             Hughson, CA 95326

Reception to follow at Tori's home.

Everyone is welcome. You know Ron would have wanted a party.

Thank you for your help.

Kindest regards,

Linda

Ron Caballero (Class of 70) was an incredible guy — very kind, generous and giving. He loved helping people and would literally give you the shirt off his back. I was fortunate to have him as campus supervisor at Pacific while I was the Dean from 1975 until 1979. He and I then both moved to Turlock where he was the coordinator of campus supervisors and I was an assistant principal at Turlock HS. He remained in that position for 8 years until he moved on to become a security officer at Modesto Junior College, where he served for many more years until his retirement.

What I remember most about him was his ability to develop trusting relationships with the students and their parents. He cared about them and they liked & respected him, even though it was his job to enforce the rules. If something bad happened on campus, Ron could be counted on to quickly determine who were the guilty culprits. Someone always owed him a favor and would tip him off. And the guilty students would almost always confess. They knew better than to lie to him.

There were a number of times at both PHS and Turlock HS where a significant theft from a student or faculty member occurred and there were no clues as to who might have done it. Soon Ron would come walking in with the stolen property. I never asked him how he did it, or who did it, as I knew that the guilty person now owed Ron a favor. The stolen property was returned and Ron had developed another trusting relationship.

Major discipline problems, especially drugs or fighting, were minimal at both schools during Ron’s tenure. The students knew that Ron would catch them and they would be held accountable. Students felt safe. They knew that Ron was there to protect and help them. I was extremely fortunate to have worked closely with him for several years before I moved to a different position in the Turlock School District. He made my job much easier.

I regret that I will be out of town attending my granddaughters’ graduations from high school and college and will not be able to attend Ron’s Celebration of Life. I encourage his classmates and former students to be there if you can make it. He would truly appreciate it. He loved getting together with longtime friends — and he had lots of them.

Linda, I copied the info and posted it to the Pacific High Class of 1970 Facebook page as well.  Our deepest condolences on Ron's passing.  I think Ron & I went as far back as kindergarten.  Such a sweet man, it was such a shock to lose him.  I plan to be at his Celebration of Life, if anyone deserves a celebration - it's Ron.

Phyllis Baker (Lively) (1966)

I'm terribly sorry to hear that Ron Cabalerro passed away - God Bless his soul and comfort Ron's family, friends, and loved ones. The Bakers and Cabalerros lived on Gardner Blvd there in San Leandro. We were just kids - and use to play hide & seek etc.,  there in the circle in front of our house. I'm one of the 5 Baker kids. I graduated class of 1966 and Ronnie, as we all knew him, was younger than me. The Cabalerros lived next door to the Ortegas or Daniels I believe - that's been a long time ago - wow! I married my sailor boyfriend August of 1966 when He returned from VietNam. A career military husband for almost 57 years in Aug we've moved around alot for nearly 30 years and retired & stayed in Texas. I often wondered what happened to the neighborhood kids I grew up with. Those truly were the good old days!  I'm so happy and proud to hear Ron had a successful life and career with school sytems and planned a married future with his beloved fiancé. My heartfelt condolences to her and thank you for having the "celebration of Life" for my childhood friend, "Ronnie". I'm sure it will be sweet sorrow yet a beautiful tribute. I am unable to attend due to our Texas location- I won't won't travel without my husband and he can't travel due to serious health issues military-related 100% disabled Veteran. But my thoughts and prayers are there with Ron, his loved ones, and friends as you celebrate the life of a fine young man Ron Cabalerro. May he rest in peace for all eternity. I always have these special words to cling to and hope & pray to bring some peace to those who mourn a loss - so for YOU in loving Memory of Ron - Ron is not gone ...,, He's simply waiting on the other side!
Blessed are those who mourn for they shall be comforted!

My deepest sympathy,
Phyllis J. Baker-Lively & Fanily
