Marina Garcia (Gelpe) (1966)

Carol and I were inseparable outside of school.  She had the greatest sense of humor in the world.  I didn't know anyone could be so funny and witty.  She drove a bright yellow '64 Comet, and we went everywhere in it:  we cruised the strip on Friday nights, we went to hear the Strawberry Alarm Clock, the Grassroots, the Misanthropes, and the Standells at Centennial Hall in Hayward, and danced all night.  We went to see A Hard Day's Night together, and we saw the Beatles live, in '64 at the Cow Palace, and in '66 at Candlestick Park.  We had a stenographer's notebook and took turns writing chapters of our original novel, Love with the Proper Beatle in it.  Nancy Griffin and Janice Beauchamp helped, too.  I wish I knew what happened to that great work of literature.  We used to write in it during class, and then pass it to the next girl, and our teachers never caught us.  We kept in touch until her marriage to Greg Coelho, and then lost contact.  Carol made my life so normal, so much fun, so rich.  She taught me to loosen up and enjoy life, and never waste a moment.  I'm sure she lived her life that way.  I will always be grateful that we were such close friends.  I'll see you on the next adventure, girl...Marina Garcia Gelpe.
