Class of 65...We have lost a fellow Viking. Our Dear friend Darrel Roloff has gone to Viking heaven (Valhalla). I do not have details, but his lovely wife Grace has posted on Facebook that he has passed away. RIP Darell.

I was sad to see that Sandy Clayton had passed away unexpectedly.  I went to Grover Cleveland because my Grandma & Grandpa Hawkins lived on Billings.  So, I grew up with Sandy & Daryl. I remember her as being feisty😀.  Loved that about her.
I really enjoy reading everyone's stories/news on this site. Thank you!

Hey Tom,

I enjoyed reading your comments about age-related issues when applying for jobs; too bad folks still have issues with older applicants.  Seems they forget all the experience and expertise older workers bring to the workplace.  It's particularly curious to find that even in professions that require advanced degrees, like yours, in fields that are highly specialized, you'd find individuals who are responsible for hiring decisions to be a bit more sophisticated and knowledgeable about such matters.  That's discouraging!

The last time you and I spoke face-to-face was many years ago. Although I'm sure you don't remember,  I stumbled on you walking to the old Life Sciences building at UC Berkeley - probably 1971 or so, and we spoke briefly about school and I asked you about your music interests and whether you were still playing in a rock-n-roll band.  You said you were not in a band at the time, but did like singin' the blues and always had an eye out for a band in need of a rhythm guitarist.  Too bad we didn't run into one another again on campus.

I've followed your career and am certainly impressed by you many accomplishments.  Glad you've done so well, though I'm not surprised.

Stay well and the best to you and your family during the upcoming holidays.

Hi Jon, thank you for your response.   Yes . . . memories.   I remember your arrival in San Leandro.   The following memory is from Mr. Spear's gym class.   I believe that you were demonstrating your skills on gymnastic rings hanging from ropes.  But possibly, you were showing your skills on the parallel bars.   I can't remember which it was.   Other memories from gym class at John Muir Jr. High School are much more distinct.  Once, I got a cramp in my foot while swimming.  Mr. Spear told me to sit on the concrete, and he gave me a foot massage.  This made the cramp go away.  Once, all of us had to line up and toss a basketball ten times into the hoop.  When it was my turn, Mr. Spear did the chit-chat thing and he asked about my father's occupation.   During this conversation, I tossed the basketball ten times, and missed every shot (I have been wondering, to this very day, why he didn't make me stay after school for an hour, and teach me how to shoot baskets).  Another time, I wore my new tennis shoes to gym class, and I had painted them with fluorescent green spray paint.  Mr. Spear made a comment about them - - - it was not a criticism, it was just a comment of observation.  Also, thank you for writing, "we spoke briefly about school and I asked you about your music interests and whether you were still playing in a rock'n'roll band."    Yah, in the past month I wish that I could find some boys to round up, and form a rock'n'roll band.  This wish was inspired by a song, PERFECT DAY.  Perfect Day can be heard in the opening minutes of the movie, Legally Blonde.   The singer is Hoku Christian Ho. She is the daughter of Don Ho. It is such a beautiful rock'n'roll song.  I want my rock'n'roll band to perform Perfect Day.  I want to sing it while playing my electric guitar.  Best regards, Tom

I barely knew her well, but do remember her and her tragic event. I don't know which kids teased her about her appearance, but how cruel!! They will have to live with themselves the rest of their lives, thinking maybe they should have not been so mean and selfish. Tragic. God rest her soul.

Daniel Moirao (1970)

For those who knew my sister, Tina Marie Moirao, she passed on January 1, 2021.  She succumbed to COVID two days after our mom.  My brother, Manny, remains on a ventilator at the time of this post for the same condition. This holiday season has been horrific for the entire family.  We do know that while there will always be an emptiness in our hearts because of our loss, there are still joy-filled days ahead. Mom and Tina would not want it any other way.

Oh Danny!  I can't believe it!   I can't imagine your grief. Seems impossible that your mom is gone and now Tina.  Poor Manny struggling, too. Amazing and awful that they all 3 got it so bad. They all lived in the house on Minerva, right?  Where is Darlene?  Thank you for letting us know.  Love to you & your family.
