Steve Butler

July 17, 1951 - May 27, 2007 Born in Oakland, CA on July 17, 1951, Steven grew up in San Leandro where he was a graduate of Pacific High School. Steven received his B.A in Sociology at Cal State Hayward and his teaching credential at Holy Names College in Oakland. Steven was a past Master Councilor for San Leandro De Molay, a member of Fruitvale Lodge #113 Free and Accepted Masons, a member of Yerba Buena #1 Chapter of E Clampus Vitus, a member of Columbo Club, and an active member of St. Paschal Baylon Church in Oakland. Steven was a teacher for the Alameda County Juvenile Court Schools for 18 years. He served as President of the Alameda County Teachers Association for 8 years, as a member of the California Teachers Association State Council for 2 years, and as a member of the Alcosta Service Center Council Steering Committee. Steven will be remembered for his passionate union activism and his love of history, politics, and music. His favorite teams were the San Francisco Giants and the San Francisco 49ers. Steven was an avid cyclist who completed his first century ride and was training for his first triathlon a month prior to his passing. Steven was the beloved husband of Mary for over 26 years; cherished brother of Sammy; loving son-in-law of Thomas and Evangeline McCartney; dear uncle to Stacy Forrester (Tim), Shelly Heckman (Tony), Scott Butler, Delena Miconi (Dan), Amanda McCartney (Chuey), and Melissa McCartney; dear great-uncle to Jacob Forrester, Miranda and Laurel Heckman, Hayley Lopez, and Daniel Miconi. Steven was predeceased by his parents, Samuel and Florene Butler and his brother-in-law, Thomas McCartney. Steven will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and colleagues. Steven's legacy lives on through the Steven L. Butler Memorial Scholarship Fund that provides monetary assistance for students who have made academic and social progress upon graduation for the Alameda County Juvenile Court Schools.
