STEPHEN "STEVE" JOHN BALERO
Born June 27, 1959 and entered peace-fully to rest January 29, 2008 with his family by his side. Steve was a Lieutenant for the Oakland Police Reserve and started his career by joining the police force in October 1989 as a reserve officer. In 1991 and 1993 he received the Officer of the Year Award. In 1992 he was promoted to the rank of Sergeant, having received several commendations for his exceptional service. He then was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant in 1994. Between the years of 1995-2005 he received the Command Officer of the Year Award seven times. Because of his dedication, on September 21, 2007 Mayor Ronald V. Dellums declared it "Stephen John Balero" day in the City of Oakland. Steve also worked the last five years at Sybase in Dublin, California as the Senior Manager of Safety and Security.
