Tim Rooney was a great guy.

During my tenure on the San Leandro City Council (1978-1982), Tim applied to (presumably succeed his father) become the new Golf Pro at the Tony Lema Golf Course.  The city staff presented the City Council with three final applicants, one of who was Tim.

At a public work session, Tim as well as the other two applicants made their presentation.  Tim's presentation was all business, simple, and to the point.  The other two seemed to offer some pizzazz that impressed a couple of the other Councilmembers. We then went into a closed session to select the new pro.

Mayor Val Gill asked the city staff to leave the room.  I already had made up my mind having heard so many good things about Tim's dad not to mention knowing him from three years at Pacific.  The Mayor let two of the Councilmembers who wanted one of the other two speak.  When they were done, the Mayor who I don't think ever played a game of golf, gave a very strong argument for Tim Rooney, mentioning his qualifications, ability, San Leandro history and more.  He said, "Tim deserved the job and had worked for it for so long."  It was an impressive leadership which I have never forgotten ...

The entire seven member City Council voted for Tim Rooney.  I had the pleasure of giving him the good news that night.

As Mayor Val Gill said, "Tim Rooney deserved the job."  Tim was a great guy .
